Our Story

Waiākea® was founded in 2012 as the first Hawaiian volcanic water and triple bottom line premium water of its kind, adapting an unparalleled platform of healthy, sustainable, and ethical/charitable attributes and initiatives.

We at Waiākea sought to create a resonating lifestyle brand that can inspire and create meaningful, positive change in a variety of ways. Our goal was to create a transformation within the bottled water, beverage, and greater CPG industry, moving away from singular profit and towards a triple bottom line model that emphasizes people and planet. We realize that these industries are only growing larger, their products multiplying, and in order to create positive, real and systemic change, it had to come from the inside-out.

Better to light a candle than curse the darkness.

Since our founding, Waiākea has continued to be recognized for its innovation, and in 2015 Waiākea was the most awarded beverage in North America.

Waiākea’s mission is to provide naturally healthy, delicious, Hawaiian volcanic water with as little impact as possible, while contributing to and promoting conservation and access to clean water and education for people in need throughout the world. This is embodied by Waiākea’s slogan “Drink Healthy, Drink Sustainably, Drink Ethically”. Waiākea volcanic water originates in Hawai’i through both snowmelt and rain on the pristine peak of the active Mauna Loa volcano, one of the purest environments on Earth. The water is then filtered through thousands of feet of porous volcanic rock that enriches Waiākea with a variety of trace minerals, making it electrolyte rich and naturally alkaline, before emerging at its source, surrounded by rich forest preserves just outside quiet Hilo town.

In accordance with the Hawaiian practice and notion of “malama i ka ‘aina”, meaning “to respect and care for the land”, Waiākea is also proud to be the first American premium bottled water and beverage to be certified CarbonNeutral for its variety of eco-initiatives, including using 100% RPET packaging, sustainable sourcing, and its regional reforestation projects.

We love what our brand represents. From the high standards it sets, to the active lifestyle it promotes, to the lives it changes. With your help we will continue to strive for the summit- kulia i ka nu’u.

FAQ
IS WAIĀKEA WATER REALLY FROM HAWAII?

Waiākea comes from a source just southwest of quiet town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, 2,400 miles from the nearest industrial landmass and surrounded by 10 million square miles of ocean. Completely isolated from the rest of the world, Waiākea offers purity in its ultimate form.

WHAT IS HAWAIIAN VOLCANIC WATER?

Hawaiian Volcanic Water is a phrase used to describe Waiākea’s unique volcanic filtration process through thousands of feet of the Mauna Loa volcano’s porous volcanic rock. This process naturally enriches the water with minerals and electrolytes, while also making it one of the most naturally alkaline waters in the world!

WHAT ELECTROLYTES DOES WAIĀKEA CONTAIN?

Waiākea is electrolyte-rich, containing 100% naturally occurring electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride. Electrolytes are charged molecules that help support the balance of fluids in the body.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARTIFICIAL AND NATURALLY ALKALINE WATER?

Naturally alkaline water has a chemical makeup that differs significantly from artificially alkaline water. Most alkaline waters on the market use ionizers and processes such as electrolysis, or even added baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

Why is this artificial? All water found in nature has a pH that perfectly corresponds to the alkaline minerals in the water such as calcium and magnesium. The problem with ionized or artificially alkaline water is that the body thinks it is receiving more alkaline minerals than what are actually present in the water.

If it is the minerals from alkaline water that the body needs, what is it possibly getting from an artificial pH? An artificial pH merely has an abundance of OH- and less H+. Can the body utilize these ions as if they were minerals? The answer is no.

From a natural standpoint, artificially alkaline waters are the GMO’s of the water world. If our goal is to be healthy, why would we drink or eat anything artificial?

Waiākea is proud to be one of the most naturally alkaline waters in the world. No artificial processes, no decreased pH over time.

DOES WAIĀKEA’S PACKAGING CONTAIN BISPHENOL A (BPA)?

No, Waiākea packaging is not made with Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical intermediate used to make plastics and resin, nor have they ever contained BPA. The quality of our water and safety of our loyal consumers are our utmost priority.

IS IT SAFE TO CONSUME WATER PACKAGED IN RPET BOTTLES?

RPET is directly comparable to PET in that it has many broad application in the food and beverage industry as primary packaging for numerous items, including soft drinks, juices, ready-to-drink teas and water as well as food items such as ketchup or peanut butter. RPET has been safely used for many years and has met FDA’s rigorous standards, ensuring its safety as food and beverage container. The FDA has conducted research reviews and concluded that RPET containers do not pose health risk to consumers and do not leach harmful amounts of substances into their contents under foreseeable conditions of use.

WHAT IS THE WORLD WATER CRISIS?

In 2012, 783 million people lacked access to clean water- that is almost 3 times the population of the United States alone. It is because of this that every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness. 6

Waiākea was founded to create positive change for not only the environment, but also for people in need throughout the world. We realize not everyone is able to have access to clean, essential, drinking water. Our goal is to change that.

To do our part, for every liter of Waiākea purchased Waiākea donates 650 liters of clean water to those in need in Africa and throughout the world, through our incredible partner, Pump Aid.

WHAT IS MALAMA I KA AIANA? HOW IS WAIAKEA CERTIFIED CARBON NEUTRAL?

Hawaiians take immense pride in their unique and primal bond with nature. In fact, Hawaiians call themselves keiki o ka ‘āina, or “children of the land.” The notion and practice of mālama i ka ‘āina, meaning “to respect and care for the land”, is one of the most important pillars of Hawaiian culture.

Waiākea takes this responsibility seriously.

Waiākea has worked diligently with The CarbonNeutral® company and Ecometrica, two of the world’s leading emissions consultants, to measure and reduce the environmental impact of both its business, and its product, to net zero.

Our environmental initiatives include using one of the most sustainable fresh water resources in the world, using only 100% RPET bottles, utilizing low emission shipping, and actively participating in regional reforestation initiatives- all of which have led Waiākea to be the first Hawaiian bottled water to be certified CarbonNeutral®.

WHAT DOES WAIĀKEA MEAN & HOW IS IT PRONOUNCED?

Waiākea, which means “broad waters” in Hawaiian, gets its name from the ancient subdivision (ahupua’a) in Hilo on the Big Island, which gets almost 360 days of rain each year. It is pronounced ‘why-uh-kay-uh’, or phonetically spelled ‘way-ә-ke-ә’.

WHAT MAKES WAIĀKEA DIFFERENT THAN OTHER WATERS AND VOLCANIC WATER BRANDS?

Waiākea is the first Hawaiian Volcanic Water of its kind with a unique and resonating platform of unparalleled Healthy, Sustainable, and Ethical attributes and initiatives. Our mission is to sustainably provide healthy and delicious Hawaiian volcanic water with as little environmental impact as possible, while contributing to and promoting clean water access to people in need throughout the world. Additionally, Waiākea hopes to inspire positive industry change in consumer products as a whole with its social platform.

WHAT TYPES OF MINERALS DOES WAIĀKEA CONTAIN?

Waiākea contains the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) of silica, giving it a uniquely smooth and soft mouthfeel, as well as magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and more. While calcium and magnesium are essential minerals, high levels of these minerals can give water the distinction of being “hard” as opposed to “soft”. These minerals also contribute to the unique pH of Waiakea.

WHAT IS THE PH OF Waiākea?

Waiākea’s pH ranges between 7.6 and 8.2, still making it one of the most naturally alkaline water brands in the world. Pure or purified water has a pH of 7. Waters can range in pH due to a variance in dissolved alkaline minerals, especially in places with high rain fall. Solutions with a pH of less than 7 are said to be “acidic” and those higher than 7, “alkaline”.

DOES WAIĀKEA USE SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING?

Waiākea prides itself on being one of the first beverages and THE first premium water in the world to use high-grade 100% RPET, or recycled polyethylene terephtalate, for all of its bottles. RPET is post-consumer recycled plastic and has incredible environmental advantages.

In comparison to regular or virgin plastic bottles, 100% RPET bottles
– use 85% less energy to manufacture
– use 90% less water
– reduce carbon emissions over 90%.4

On top of this, we only use the highest quality RPET to make our bottles, bottles that are also BPA Free.

RPET is also fully recyclable and can be transformed into a number of products such as food and beverage packages, apparel, carpet, automotive parts, and construction materials. Please recycle!

DOES WAIĀKEA COME IN GLASS BOTTLES?

Waiākea does not come in glass bottles for a variety of reasons. We bottle our water exclusively in high-grade RPET bottles because it is the BPA-free, optimal packaging for protecting the quality of our water (avoids cleaning agents used for glass, oxygen migration, and carbon dioxide which can effect taste) and ensuring product safety (no breakage), while at the same time minimizing our environmental impact with its significantly lower carbon footprint (not including lightweight savings).

DOES WAIĀKEA MEET FDA BOTTLED WATER REGULATIONS FOR WATER QUALITY?

Yes, Waiākea conforms to all of the FDA’s requirements and has received its title 21 certifications. These are readily made available to the public on our Contact page. Transparency is extremely important to our Ohana.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE FOR WAIĀKEA?

Waiākea uses a conservative FDA standard “best by” date of two years for all water sold in the United States, although we could easily extend this to 5. The “best by” date can be found on the back of each Waiākea bottle, beneath the label. The FDA does not require an expiration date.
